The Voice I've Been Given

As I write this, I am 18 weeks pregnant to-the-day. Surprise! (Just in case you missed it, the birth announcement was in my last post). According to the video on my “What to Expect” app, “Mighty” (our baby’s nickname) can hear my voice. The video also explained that baby gets so used to mama’s voice in the womb, that it is often the first voice he/she recognizes outside of it. Pretty amazing, right?

This fun little fact made me think about the incredible opportunity I get every week to serve with an amazing worship team at. They encourage and challenge me every week to become, not just a better singer, but a more powerful worshiper. Our worship pastor has reminded me time and time again that the baby growing inside of me is worshiping with us, with me, every time I’m on stage. That means while I’m up there praising Jesus, “Mighty” is listening and getting accustomed to MY voice.

It’s such a beautiful sight to imagine… a mama singing to her baby while that precious child is still in the womb. What a unique and divine opportunity given to mamas-to-be. Even with my daughter now, I cherish those rare moments when she is still enough for me to hold her in my arms and sing to her. This sweet, earthly experience reminds me of the very real heavenly truth that God is singing over us.

“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17, ESV)

Imagine the tender  voice a mother uses to sing beautiful songs over her child to calm him/her, or the powerful and excited voice she lifts up in times of celebration with her babe. Such is the character of the Father. As I type this with tears streaming down my face, I am reminded that when my soul longs to be at peace, my Daddy is singing songs over me to quiet my soul. And when things are going great, He’s singing excitedly in praise with me. How good is this Father we have. Oh how sweet is His voice…

To the mamas and mamas-to-be: No matter how old our children are, our voices have a uniquely powerful impact on them. Are we using our voices to sing songs of love and praise over them? Are they accustomed to our voices ushering the peace of God into their circumstances?

These questions are both encouraging and convicting to me as I ponder the words and tones I have used either speaking directly to my children, or having conversations around them. My prayer is that more often than not my voice reminds my children of the sweet, loving, gentle voice of that Lord that is ALWAYS full of wisdom, life, and peace!

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. (Proverbs 16:24, NIV)

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26, ESV)
